Excessive Underarm Sweating: What You Might Not Know

Excessive Underarm Sweating

Have you ever experienced excessive underarm sweating even after applying antiperspirant? If so, then you could have a condition called hyperhidrosis. Sometimes, you might sweat when you don’t expect to sweat excessively, such as when you’re sitting on your couch watching television or when you’re in a cold environment. In most situations, you’re usually healthy aside from the excessive sweating. Fortunately, there are treatments that you can try that are offered by our office.

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that can make you begin to rethink many things about your daily routine. You might think about the types of clothes that you wear and the colors that you wear so that you don’t reveal stains at awkward times. Sometimes, you might have to alter the plans that you have for the day so that you’re not around people just in case there is an issue with excessive sweating. Excessive sweating that is related to hyperhidrosis is similar to a faucet that you can’t get turned off. Sometimes, the nerves that are in your underarms are overactive, producing an abnormal amount of sweat. At other times, the condition is caused by a medical condition, such as issues with your thyroid or diabetes. There are also some medications that can result in excessive sweating.

There’s usually no age restrictions for excessive sweating as the condition can impact children and older adults. The condition impacts both men and women and all backgrounds. For most people who experience excessive underarm sweating, they bathe all the time in order to prevent an odor from developing. You might wear more deodorant or perfumes in order to hide the sweat as well. Sometimes, you might excuse yourself while you’re at work or while you’re with friends or family so that you can wash up or make sure that there are no sweat stains on your clothes.

Most of the time, this kind of sweating does not happen all the time. It’s usually triggered by an activity or an episode. There are times when you can have dry days without sweating. You might sweat for a few minutes during the day and be dry for the rest of the day. A dermatologist can help to determine the cause of your excessive underarm sweating and the best treatment for your situation.
